I started working with Carol and Jack four months ago. Despite being married three decades, they were separated when I started working with them. They had many unresolved issues including substance use, previous infidelity, and adult children living at home.
After reading this book, they applied these skills in our couples counseling sessions, steadily working through their challenging issues. Jack eventually moved back in and they’re enjoying each other’s company again, listening to music on the weekends and recently enjoying a vacation together.
They can now talk about issues on their own. When one of their conversations begins to derail, they humorously say, “Dr. Rein wouldn’t approve.” This is a quick, amusing way to give feedback and bring a conversation back on track. Now they’re repairing as successful couples do.
