Without Imposing

Derek and Janine were struggling in their relationship. Tension was high, and they were disconnected. We discussed how they could express their opinions without imposing them.

Both of them had strong opinions. However, when they expressed their opinions, they thought their opinion was right, inferring that their partner’s opinion was wrong.

Instead, we talked about exchanging thoughts and ideas: “I think this. . .” and “I think this. . . .” Relationships are at their best when couples share ideas. Conversations devolve when partners try to convince their partner that their thoughts are correct, imposing their ideas on their partner. Instead, sharing thoughts creates healthy dialogue.
