Robert and Joyce were processing a recent conflict in couples counseling. During the argument, Robert told Joyce that she was “making a mountain out of a mole hill.” 

I told Robert that his comment was dismissive, suggesting that Joyce was exaggerating a minor issue. If Joyce brings up an issue, it’s assumed something is bothering her. 

Successful couples bring up issues, and their partners address them. In this case, Robert dismissed Joyce’s issue.
