When we think about trust in relationships, we usually think about fidelity. Fidelity means the boundaries of the relationship are intact, i.e., there is loyalty to the relationship by not straying outside of the relationship—physically or emotionally.
How partners treat each other inside the relationship is another area of trust. We want the relationship to be a refuge from the demanding, stressful world around us. We want to be comfortable sharing our thoughts and feelings, confident that we will be supported.
Treating each other with respect creates a feeling of safety inside the relationship. Ideally one feels loved and is able to love within the relationship. Treating a partner with respect creates a culture of trust within the relationship.
