An Exchange of Ideas

Couples get in trouble when they try to convince or persuade their partner of their point of view. This mindset sets up a debate in which there’s a winner and a loser.

Instead, share your point of view and let your partner share theirs. When you combine two good minds, you may come up with a more preferable position or solution.

I see this frequently with co-parenting. One parent has a way to approach a situation, and the other parent has a different approach. In parenting, there is rarely a right way to parent. It’s more of an art, knowing your child’s personality, and a parent’s degree of influence. The exchange of ideas in parenting typically creates improved solutions.

Rather than persuading your partner, think of discussions as an exchange of ideas and perspectives. Your relationship will benefit.
