I was in the process of concluding marriage counseling work with a couple. When this couple first came to counseling, they struggled over small issues, not talking to each other for days. This no longer happened as they applied their new-found skills, and their loving connection returned.
The couple mentioned they were in marriage counseling previously but the treatment was ineffective. I asked them more about their previous experience. They said the therapist listened to both of their sides and decided who was right.
Successful couples counseling isn’t about who is right. It’s learning how both of you can work through conflict and disconnection, eventually applying these skills outside of counseling.
