“I did.” or “I didn’t.” are often examples of defensiveness. If a partner says you did not do something and the response is “I did.”, or a partner says you did do something and the response is “I didn’t.”, the tone of the response is defensive. It’s possible one may be clarifying what he or she did or didn’t do, but generally the words indicate a defensive reaction.
